The Cherry Capital of the World
The county seat of Grand Traverse County, Traverse City is also a resort area. It is the largest city in northern Michigan and has a population of about 14,550 residents. Its Tuscany-like countryside makes home a welcoming place to return to and its downtown is a major commercial area to easily find all the necessities and attractions of everyday living. The city is at the head of Grand Traverse Bay, which comes from Lake Michigan. Traverse City also sits at the base of the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas. Population density is relatively low with about 1,726 people per square mile. The typical resident is 38 years old, educated, married, travels 16 minutes to work, lives in a household of two, and enjoys a household income of $41,100.

Events and Attractions
As the Cherry Capital of the World, the city holds the week-long Cherry Festival the first full week of every July to celebrate the bright red fruit. The festival brings parades, fireworks, live music and cherries, of course. The city produces up to 360 million pounds of cherries each year. However, grapes are also a major crop in the city, making it on of the wine centers of the Midwest. Freshwater beaches, mild summers, upscale golf resorts, vineyards, ski resorts and thousands of miles of forests are only some of the reasons why visitors flock to Traverse City. Also, boating and kayaking among the sparkling waters are always part of a fair day's activity. The Traverse City State Park features 250 campsites on 47 acres of land and a quarter-mile of beach, making for a great weekend escape.

Education
Traverse City Area Public Schools operates 21 schools from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The district provides a Chinese immersion preschool through kindergarten enrichment program along with other enrichment programs throughout the years to produce individuals who are ready for livelihood in the 21st century. There are also many charter and private schools in the city including the fine arts boarding and day school, Interlochen Arts Academy. In the city is Northwestern Michigan College, a public institution enrolling over 2,300 full-time students. Other post-secondary schools in the area include Ferris State University, Central Michigan University, Muskegon Community College, Northwood University, Grand Rapids Community College, Aquinas College, and Grand Valley State Unviersity.
